100 Heads Challenge

This 100 Heads project is a continued exploration of my identity and curiosity as an artist.  It allowed me the time and space to explore my inclination towards portraits.  The power of a facial expression speaks so much of a person's world, it has become a driving force in my artistic journey. The project offered me play and experimentation, exploring new mediums and techniques.  The heads project let me develop the skill of capturing the likeness of my references.  I aim to seamlessly integrate the insights I’ve gained from this project into my upcoming creative endeavours. The lessons learned here will serve as a foundation, guiding and inspiring my exploration in new projects.

When I look back at my work, there's a reoccurring theme of portraiture. I don't believe it was ever a conscious decision but maybe a path that unfolded for me during my years in photography.  I recall a shift after learning of Dorothea Lange and her piece, Migrant Mother, that image had an immediate response for me.  It was exciting.  Shortly after I fell in love with the paintings of Frida Kahlo, the use of colour and incorporating unusual imagery ignited a fire in my artist heart.  The intensity of her painted portraits created an instant connection.

The project served as a canvas for my unending curiosity about shape, form, and their translation onto canvas (paper).  It enabled me to recreate what I observe while leaving room for the subject's character to shine through and the viewer's interpretation to be an active part of the experience. In essence, this endeavor encapsulates my ongoing quest to understand and interpret the human face and its features with a sense of authenticity.
